Back in 2011, 99% of thermostats in the US were installed by HVAC professionals. Wanting a specific model wasn’t a thing: your thermostat came with the furnace, its cost a rounding error within a much larger invoice. We knew if we wanted to create a new behavior, we had to go direct to consumer, and break through customer complacency. We had to make the humble thermostat sexy.
